Our Guest Poet

DGPS Poet - Mike Richardson

Born north of the boarder Mike travelled extensively as a serviceman's kid, until finally settling in Pembrokeshire.  Now a city dweller, as Mike terms himself; he still hankers after the country life which is a major inspiration for his poetry.

In poems such as 'Grey' and 'Grace' one can hear nature sing most joyously.  In the poem 'Three peak trilogy', nature is summoned through the eyes of a driver supporting a mountanous expedition.  I thought I had no significant connection to nature, yet here I somehow feel an old connection; perhaps from childhood long forgotton?  That poetry can evoke the country in someone who never thought it within them, it's quite remarkable.

Metaphysics runs a course through Mike's poetry, nature herself often allegorically hearalds life's bigger questions.  Poems of Christian spirituality like 'Aquarius' offer a very human delicate touch.  Not surprisingly a keen sense of social justice is also found, with poems such as 'For Remembrance'.  Humour and punny humour at that, can and will be used in evidence against Mike, but we will leave that for the accused, I mean poet to divulge.

Our Guest Musician

Helen Maher

As a solo artist, vocalist or member of Trez Fez (a gypsy jazz inspired ensemble) Helen's clean crip vocals and fine accordian playing eases any audience into the ambiance of  the 'French cafe'.  Her music is at once timeless and yet also of a very different time and place.  Fine wine and cigarette smoke almost emanate from the audio links (you think not - check them out ;)

A guest of BBC Radio Merseyside and time spent touring with Ian Prowse (Amsterdam fame), Not one to miss!

No free bus, but your welcome to join us. I've done the drive to Hebdon Bridge for a poetry night before - so guessing that's similar. A journey, but doable.

The company is great, the event free. We'd even film a poet that travelled that far. If you search YouTube and type - merseypoetryscene into the seach bar as one word, you'll find about 9 months worth of poetry filmed from the event.

If you can't make the trip - you might enjoy some of the poetry in a virtual sense from home.

Best

Chris
