Somerset poetry group finds new venue after theatre closure

A group of poets in Somerset has found a new venue after the Brewhouse theatre, pictured, in Taunton was forced to close because of funding cuts. Fire River Poets say their events programme will continue as planned at the Creative Innovation Centre, Memorial Hall, Paul Street, Taunton. The next event will be on 7 March and will feature Sue Boyle.

The chairman of Fire River Poets, John Stuart, told Write Out Loud: “The Brewhouse has gone through some torrid times over the last few years ... and budgets are being cut at all levels locally. It's easy to cut arts budgets. Naturally, we feel this is misguided. The Brewhouse has been extraordinarily valuable to us in Taunton and in the surrounding towns and villages.”

According to The Stage, the Brewhouse said that following years of cuts to its public funding, the 352-seat theatre venue and gallery “desperately” needed more investment but was “unable to secure an agreement in time” to stay open. A local campaign to reopen the Brewhouse as a volunteer-run community theatre has already started.

It's always sad and regrettable when such a venue has to close. Times are difficult but it can also be said that "art" needs to be vigorously funded by those most closely involved, whether it be music, poetry, painting or whatever. Local interest is essential and it comes down to putting money up front for local benefit. If I, as a pensioner, can spend money on sponsoring music, then surely - multiplied by ???? - money can come from others in support of their special interests and a valuable multi-purpose asset like a theatre. Good luck to the "campaign group" and may its efforts be rewarded. Apathy is the biggest enemy of such endeavours and a large cachement area like Taunton should have its door knockers rattled vigorously!!
