First Night Of Snow

entry picture

The world has gone to bed
Under clean sheets

Snow a foot deep
Is covering the rotten leaves of the yard,

The wheelbarrow and cedar logs
Are sleeping too.

That night nothing happens-
Dreams fill with static,
Faces go hidden,
No words are said.

A silence of falling
Cuts out all echoes.

Even the cat,
First across the new world,
Can hear itself breathing.

Love the opening two lines!
All in all, a pleasing portent of winter.

This is lovely. You do capture that lovely hush of falling snow. I see what Harry means about the static - no doubt that has assocations for you - are you trying to find an original image for warmth, I wonder?

An enjoyable read, even though it heralds a winter I'm not much looking forward to.

Tom,
This is full of a silent softness.

(but I`m not sure about the `static`)
