Things to do

Spin the washing and hang it up

Mow the lawn and rake up the grass

Put out the bin and sort out your life

Oh and get a carton of milk before you go home to the wife

You’ve got your shirt to iron before you go to work

And your shoes need buffing and the car needs filling

So you’ve got no choice but to put your life on hold

But there’s time for a pint before you go home to the wife

There’s a crossword to solve and the TV to watch

And you’ve got your arrows so there’s a chance of a match

The barmaid’s smile is warming you up

So you smile back before you go home to the wife

Paint the fence and weed the path

The next door neighbours in a bit of a pickle

Her car won’t start and the battery’s flat

Get out your jump leads before you go home to the wife

Spain is on my mind at this time of year

The sea so blue and oh so clear

You get that feeling where you want to be free,

Watch the girls before you go home to the wife.

So many times you get that feeling

Where work is hard and it starts you dreaming

One day you’ll pack it in, jet off to Spain and start a new life

Take things easy before you go home to the wife.

Thanks Alison, I was going in the way you thought but it just didn't feel right. Have you ever seen Billy Liar? Remember the end when hes leaving for London? He was never really going at all, just like the guy in the poem. Best wishes, Steve

hehehe. For some reason I expected the last line to be about starting a new life without the wife! Or about her having already departed for this without you! I enjoyed it, full of life's reasons why we don't prioritise the person we love, and it seems reasonable and normal not to.
