beguiled by seals

entry picture

On Porthgwidden beach

I was beguiled by seals

as, slippery as eels

they smoothly sparred and courted

romantically cavorted

on the darkling tide.

Nipping, so I could see revealed

two pink mouths snapping.

Their backs made

Loch Ness Monster shapes

then, two heads alert,

eager as dogs waiting

for a ball.

Chasing off again, both caught

in a glassy wave

revealed -

in love

two seals.

Ta Andy - I know it's just a bit of whimsy! And anthropomorphism of course! But hey - not mortal sins so I'll leave those seals be. x

really enjoyed this, Ann - i do think the ending is a bit tellie however.. it could work better with a repeat of the end of the first stanza better.. either way, it's beauitful stuff x

Thanks Lynn - I know "nature" poems aren't everyone's cup of tea! When I was staying in St Ives last week I went for a walk on the beach just as it was getting dark and there were these two seals really close in to shore. Magic!

What a lovely poem, Ann, I love seals (well, all wildlife really) and this is so charming. x
