Pension Crisis

A string of successive governments

Have completely failed to foresee

The pension crisis looming,

So our coalition was all at sea.

“People are living much longer!

So we will raise the retirement age.

There’s not enough money to pay out!

Everyone must save from their wage.”

Check any cost of living survey,

They all come out at much more

Than the national minimum wage,

So to save, there are many too poor.

And just because we may live longer

Doesn’t mean we’re all still fit.

What about manual workers

Who just aren’t up for it?

Besides, is it the ageing workers’ fault

They are being treated this way?

A whole lifetime of national insurance

Contributions they’ve had to pay.

A government knee-jerk reaction,

Dealing with one thing at a time.

Pretending there’s full employment

When there’s out of work in their prime.

Some of the younger unemployed

Have growing families to support,

So more benefits will have to be paid.

Where is the joined up thought?

And we’re so sorry for living longer!

We’re such inconsiderate sods!

Perhaps the government can tell us

When they’d like us to pop our clogs!

indeed Lynn
it is those who have paid in all their lives
and the shoddy way they are treated
that causes people to be so angry.

what a shambles!

our best to you

Lynn,
Government assisted subsidised travel to Dignitas in Switzerland would alleviate this problem and reduce the pension bill greatly.

I am sure that Dignitas would also provide-and staff - a completely unbiased counselling service for the undecided (If the coalition would subsidise that body also)

I am sure such arrangements must exist elswhere.

Thanks for raising what is a very real problem.

Great rant Lynn and addresses the concerns many have especially in the present financial climate. As your last verse implies, is poverty or good health the ultimate choice? Pass.
