A resignation of sleeping owls

dusty newel posts, swivel heading.

Two plump packed zebras in

chocolate and ivory

one hoof coquettishly angled.

Anonymous creatures on secret missions,

fossa, agoutis, kinkajou and pangolin.

A perky bat, chittering, almost within reach.

Connie roars then sleeps, sulky browed.

She licks like my homecat but her tongue is longer than my arm.

Her head is massive, solid as a castle keep.

Paws chunky as velvet breeze blocks.

A trudge down Newquay streets to Lusty Glaze where

lumpy women heave Frisbees, just missing my ear.

Rocks bristle with mussels.

Children in baggy shorts lash out at cricket stumps.

Dogs threaten, spar, capitulate.

Behind us on the cliffs the hotels jostle.

Edwardian pride sidling up to modern cubist drab.

Tangles of shops push and shove

mostly selling dross.

On the headland the whitewashed Hewer’s hut,

the place for spotting herring shoals

long ago.

Trek to the bus station.

Our bus is cancelled - we get the 837 home.

Yes, Charlie is her younger brother. And they are both past it, apparently! She finished off Kabir, a previous paramour, I believe, though it is never spoken of. Though hinted at in an ancient poem wot I might post if you are very good! ;-) xx

Ta Ray - I hoped swivel heading might be an active description of what the owls were doing, but maybe it doesn't work. I've lost my cyvets! (And I didn't feel a thing!) I wrote this yesterday, on said beach - adding the missing the bus bit when I got home. 837 is the number of the bus! (Though I'm sure we can't possibly HAVE 837 buses in Cornwall - when you're waiting for one is doesn't seem like it anyway! Will consider the other suggestions, and thank you very much.

I like this,Ann. It's kind of a shame that the zoo is left abruptly, though. Here's my sugges- for what they're worth!
swivel-headed rather than swivel heading. The zebras bit is good, I think.
The 2nd verse is very good, except that rhythmically you could do with losing an animal and downturned.I liked "lumpy women".Still do-Ha!
"Edwardian pride nudging modern cubist drab" might be better?
Is 837 the number of the bus or its time?
