Water-birth

entry picture

Water-birth

Your crown burns like fire as you pass

From womb to warm water

Without a gasp

Submerged, head first

Eyes hidden,

Your fine hair sways like sea-grass

And the soft helix of your ear is born

Naked on my thigh.

All is still

And time is measured in a breathless pause

Generations seem to pass

Waiting for your shoulders to rotate,

Until

With pouting grimace

Your profile glides to view.

You are familiar, I know you.

A wave of agonising joy and you surge forth

Ejected and expelled

At once alone

Separate

Launched into life, at last

I lift you slowly and

Your head emerges

From the balmy water.

You take a breath, your first,

And murmur sweetly,

I breathe you in

Gaze into the dark universe of your eyes

And hold you to my breast.

Dear Carol~ how well you wrote this magnificent poem of MIRACLE on the making. I was yesterday visiting my adopted family. The young mother gave a birth to a very beautiful baby girl. The baby was so adorable. I hold her in my arms when she slept so peacefully wrapped in a flannel wraps. The baby was like a little princess.
It was one of those days that I really enjoyed visiting hospital, celebrating new life.

Thank you for the warm poem and the beauty in your words as you described the birth in a very wonderful way. This is such an important life event for every family.

BEAUTIFUL POEM !

Thank you,
Zuzanna

Carol I love this. Very real with lovely expressed detail throughout. I like the line,

'I breath you in, Gaze into the dark universe of your eyes'

"Your fine hair sways like sea-grass".

This is wonderful imagery and compliments the rest of a well constructed and heart felt piece.

Thanks Guys. I'm chuffed with your comments. I was a midwife for many years, so as well as having two daughters of my own I have been fortunate to be with many women while they birthed their babies. Every birth was amazing.
It sounds like your partners were fortunate to have you there with them. The support of someone you love is vital.

For me, though the pain is mentioned it is almost just in passing as the joy of meeting the baby, you have know so long already, the natural endorphines and hormones quickly rushing in to damped the pain and make you forget the worst of it. Great write, as a father of two, present at both, it's an experience I'm glad I didn't miss and I would of changed places.

Hi Carol, you have described wonderfully the joy of what can be a messy business, I know i was there, but wouldn't swap places! Thanks for sharing, best wishes Jeff
