Previous skins

Five years ago flew by

Now, already remote

The rolling of the years

They’re already afloat

Your past self

Already a ghost

When you stand still

You begin to grieve your previous skins

Wonder why you had to forget and kill

Old personalities just to multiply new

So, you cling on to specific moments

Promise not to forget, you never will

But it is not unique to shed

(Though that doesn’t remove nature’s cruelty)

The twenty intense life moments where you bled

Drop down savagely in your head

To just ten, before five, vague and numb

To just stories, the connection dead

It’s not just the details that are removed

It’s the feeling in them too - it’s the you

It feels like someone else’s life

Though you know that’s not true

And you can’t shake this feeling

That your past life was stolen from you

And before we know it,

We are only left with the ‘now’

It’s a lonely hole, a darkening pit

The rest of you will be swallowed down

Forcing your rebirth, sentenced to the present

You’re forever to be a newborn in the here and now

Your memory loss is designed to go on unsevered

We are cursed to be helpless children forever

And you can’t shake this feeling
That your past life was stolen from you

I sometimes feel like that!

The last line is quite chilling, Alexandra. A friend of mine said recently: 'one day I woke up and I was sixty and fat'. I guess we are shedding (so to speak) previous selves all the time. A fascinating, perceptive poem. Thanks.

Quite Larkinesque, or perhaps I shouldn't say such things.

What a great subject! Very apt title too! Good to see you again Alexandra, you keep us hungry for more here on WOL. Renewal isn’t such a bad thing.
