It's Not a Story / No es un Cuento

entry picture

Everyone loves a story,
whether it's made up or true,
the Pharisee commander, with his tongue,
was a master of this art

People looked forward to hearing him
when he went out to preach,
he would recite litanies for hours incessantly;
everyone applauded him endlessly

Stories well told by the Pharisee commander,
so elaborate that they were taken as the truth,
and bewitched people gave him their approval
and elected him president

It has been twenty-five years since the storytelling began,
and so much has happened that the time has come
to unveil whether the Pharisee commander
was telling truths or lies

The Pharisee commander declared it unacceptable that the elderly, after a lifetime of work, should not have enough to eat or be cared for when they fell sick; twenty-five years have passed and the elderly eat less, now they receive barely six dollars a month; their dignity is trampled and they weep in grief, knowing that when their wife dies they will not even have enough to bury her

The Pharisee commander, referring to the poor, said that because being poor they were treated with indifference and humiliation, they should not be judged or sent to prison if they went out to steal; twenty-five years have passed and the poor are poorer, but now multiplied by millions; they no longer steal money, but scavenge in a dumpster for rotten food

The Pharisee commander described it as a painful injustice to see abandoned children wandering the streets and blamed previous presidents for the indolence that led to this unforgivable shame; twenty-five years have passed and children, like ants, wander the streets without food or hope, unable to understand why they have to beg, while they see other children ride in luxury vans

The Pharisee commander affirmed that it was a betrayal to have given the wealth of the nation, for more than a century, to countries that exploited our most precious resource; twenty-five years have passed and a significant part of the national wealth has been given to an island they call the "Sea of Happiness" and who, as foreigners here, have privileges and give orders everywhere as if this were their barracks; while the citizens, isolated, barely receive alms once a month

The Pharisee commander lashed out at previous governments, calling them corrupt, vicious degenerates, and frying their heads was the solution he came up with; twenty-five years have passed, corruption has changed hands, it far exceeds all previous decades; injustice is in plain sight, while some show off their newly bought Ferraris, the starving majority waits for a bus that is always late

The Pharisee commander said that the high-ranking military were crooks, traitors without honor, for they did not fulfill their oath to protect the nation, and so corrupt that they would fall to their knees if they were bribed with a hen; twenty-five years have passed, and if a soldier kills an adversary, he is quickly promoted; they no longer kneel for a hen, it is well known that the rate has gone up to a Mercedes, or at least being appointed ambassador in some distant country

The Pharisee commander never tired of repeating, as a mantra he would say, that "being rich was bad” and that everyone should be equal; twenty-five years have passed and being rich is not bad if you belong to the government or are connected to power; shamelessly now show what they’ve stolen and many who had nothing now have a plane, a mansion and at least two BMWs

The Pharisee commander shouted loudly, that yesterday's rulers deserved to be tried and imprisoned for the torture and murder committed against innocent people; twenty-five years have passed and it turns out that the opposite is true; his government and the current one, appear in UN reports for thousands of unexplained deaths and torture; the International Criminal Court has them in its sights to put them in prison, declaring admissible the charges for violations of all human rights

The Pharisee commander, as an epilogue to his own story,
bequeathed to the nation a shameless buffoon,
trained and coached by the Cuban regime,
appointed to continue the task he had gloriously begun;
ten years have passed and everything is worse

They are openly stealing the country's resources,
destroying forests and poisoning waters
with mercury to extract gold and diamonds;
devastating whatever they find,
leave everything barren,
as if it were a biblical plague

Those in power are very generous with political opponents,
they are labeled terrorists, exiled or imprisoned,
and many others who have no scruples
are like puppies waiting for a bite,
to secure a tiny share of power

Studying is irrelevant, it is very easy to pass a grade,
even if they can hardly read or do not know math, no one fails;
this was the order given, because the power knows well
that ignorance is their profit, while their own children graduate
from the Sorbonne or Yale

Ten million stolen doesn't mean anything,
it's common and routine,
now we're talking billions
and no one is surprised at all

They have stolen so much that they now travel to Dubai,
they have even learned to eat like true gourmets,
leaving behind the canned sardines
that they could barely afford in the past

They rub elbows with kings and princesses in some Middle Eastern country, and because they have been to a business banquet now they think they are nobility; that is certainly a remarkable feat!

It is striking and ironic that there are millions who left,
many of them applauded the repeated narratives
that in the end stripped them of everything they had and,
leaving behind their espadrilles,
they fled with their tails between their legs

Words are carried away by the wind,
but in this case it swept away a nation
and saddest of all,
this is not a fairy tale,
this is called Venezuela...

A todos les gusta un cuento,

sea verdadero o inventado,

y los viejos comen menos, ahora apenas reciben seis dólares al mes;

que había llevado a esta vergüenza imperdonable;

a países que explotaban nuestro recurso más preciado;

y freír sus cabezas fue la solución que ofreció;

sobrepasa con creces todas las décadas anteriores;

que caían de rodillas si se les sobornaba con una gallina;

mata a un oponente lo ascienden rápidamente, al menos a teniente;

que él gloriosamente había empezado;

con mercurio para extraer oro y diamantes;

aunque apenas sepan leer o no sepan matemática
