We do not know the future tense round here,

But deal in possibilities and mays;

Learning hypotheticals and options

And other such conditional displays.

Predictions in our world remain unsafe;

Coming weeks and months are speculation.

We may be staying here or going home;

Others will decide our situation.

We say ‘good morning,’ ‘thank you for your help’:

Phrases in this unfamiliar tongue.

But how will we recover what we’ve missed

Through barren days when we should have been young?

Thank you so much, John C and John B. It is so sad seeing children and young people living in this limbo, resilient and optimistic though many of them are.

Written with immense skill and compassion, Stephen. Imagining the almost unimaginable!

Thank you, Keith. Yes, the uncertainty must be the worst aspect of the lives of so many Ukrainian refugees. And, as you say, this feeling spreads to all of us in some way.

And thanks to RG, K Lynn, Hélène, Manish and Rudyard for liking this poem.

Stephen,
A thought provoking poem and appropriate for the times in which we live. Three lines stand out:
"Others will decide our situation" and the last two lines of the final stanza. What makes life difficult today, is the terrible feeling of uncertainty and our impotence to influence what affects us.
Thank you for this
Keith
