Not yet Dead but Buried

Not yet Dead but Buried

A disc jockey once said

"a rave from the grave"

"a revive forty five"

as the turn table began to spin

and the music blared into life

Those of seventy years or more are written off

a generation of little or no value

has beens

They are told they live in the past

the time has come to listen to the present

The voices of youth are the dreams of the future

The oldies have had their day when they held sway

Let them collect their pensions and call it a day

They sit in God's waiting room

reading a copy of "Those Twilight Years"

Banished to wheel chairs and frames

polishing their medals till dawn

Some can barely remember their name

It is the future that counts

let them reminisce and day dream

they are the burden of our latest seam

Inside their grey and caulifower heads

behind their leathery and wrinkled skin

As they totter about in their greenhouses

and fill waiting rooms with sundry ailments

It is these old items of baggage

who have sustained this nation

Within their ancient frames

lie wisdom and experience unparalleled

They are gold mines of knowledge

and have lived through grief and joy

years of plenty and years of famine

In the elderly we have a valuable resource

men and women, professional and skilled

who are still able to make a valuable

contribution to the world of today

and influence the future

Yet they are piled on the scrap heap

of life in decay

Or are they are a reservoir waiting to be tapped?

They, of many years can enlighten today's age

Forget them and you ignore an abundance of wisdom

to your eternal regret

Thank you for all your 'likes' and comments. Stephen, Barenboim is a great favourite of mine and glad to hear that he is back on form. Ray what kind of camera do you use?
Thank you again

If you find yourself consigned to a heap it's best to walk round it Keith I have found. Your own self respect is what counts, self management and belief not blind acceptance of the seemingly inevitable, though I agree it is hard work sometimes. I usually walk round with a film camera; young people often comment and it and I feel validated.! Happy new year to you.

Cheers, Keith. I will be seventy this year and this inspires me. To see Daniel Barenboim return to conducting after illness in his eighties give us all hope.

We are indeed:
a reservoir waiting to be tapped.

As is this grandad's wallet😉

As I approach the end of my 8th decade in this life, I am not
personally aware of being viewed as "on the scrap heap" - but
if so, I'll take all the advantages! In the meantime, I recall the wisdom from an oldie of my acquaintance back in the 70s who
sagely advised the younger me always to "take part" in life.
That can be adapted to circumstances but certainly returns its
own variety of benefits. My own advice: Hang in there!! But
try not to let it all hang out! 😊

Keith you have played an ace with this absolutely fabulous poem
which I would love ( if it were possible ) to be read OUT LOUD to the whole world so that those regardless of nationality

who conveniently turn a deaf ear when this subject is mentioned couldn't fail to do anything else but-
sit up and take BLOODY NOTICE! once and for all time

thank god for and bless our golden oldie silver surfers-unsung heroes most of them without any doubt

Rose 💋
