Entropy

entry picture

We have no time

for the impending heat death of the universe,

there is too much to distract

ourselves with down here.

You're quietly explaining

your heart has shifted from where it once was,

as if knocked from its orbit

by some mysterious force.

The universe tends toward disorder,

your eyes seem to say

just as the ice melting in the glass

and the coffee cooling in the cup

just as the nine billion year old star

extinguishes itself at the edge

of the observable universe

and the black hole at the centre of our galaxy

eats the fabric of space-time,

just as dark energy pervades the

empty space between physical matter

and drives universes apart

just your eyes won't meet mine

and your fingers now

let go of my hand.

A brilliant poem Tom, I love the combination of ideas here; and the ending is perfect.

Terrific blend of coffee and cold comfort Tom. A nimble and reflective mind at work.
