Living the Dream...

I can’t afford to service the Porsche!

I’ve cancelled our holiday to St Tropez!

I don’t have enough left to heat the pool!

And what will all our posh friends say,

When Jemima leaves her boarding school?

Her parents are too poor to pay!

From any rational point of view,

We’re living, now, a dream come true.

Our gratitude, though, is seldom expressed:

Old age pensions and the N.H.S.,

Electricity, heating, clean water on tap,

Food aplenty, piled on the plate.

A television, so we can vegetate.

It may not be Nirvana, yet,

Why should we bemoan our fate?

“Darling, would you kindly peel me a grape?”

Our forebears worked down in the mines,

Cleaned mill chimneys, toiled on the land.

They would find it hard to understand

How harshly we view our lives today.

“You are living our dreams!”

I think they would say…

You make the point brilliantly, John. I like the way you drop in the line 'A television, so we can vegetate'. That's what comes of watching too much Jeremy Clarkson....😀

'Luxury!' In a red wall accent, of course!
