Ulysses and Argos

Once of splendid build, nothing he couldn't track.
Now neglected Argos yearns for his master back.
Argos, so frail and tired lies on a cow dung heap.
Lice invested, he dreams of Ulysses in his sleep.
Ulysses left his homeland for Troy 20 years ago.
Argos was a noble, faithful dog, not just for show.
In those years, he wasn't cared for, grew old alone.
Then after much struggle, Ulysses returned home.
Once in Ithaca, Ulysses was not a recognised man.
He was forgotten by all, over that 20 year span.
But Argos had not forgotten him over those years.
He found the strength to wag his tail, drop his ears.
In his beggars disguise Ulysses, silently he cried.
Argos saw his master one more time, then he died.
