For Jo

The first night of our holiday
in the bar taking part in a quiz
We sit next to a friendly couple
drinking a beer and a gin fizz

We didn’t get the highest score
and didn’t win the prize of the night
But we had a good laugh between us
at the answers we didn’t get right

Over the week we met up often
in the bars, restaurants and cafes
We chatted about this and that
shared stories of past holidays

It came up in conversation
there had been tough times for Phil and Jo
Jo had been diagnosed with cancer
and needed further treatment and chemo

Looking at Jo it was hard to believe
what they were telling us was true
Hard to imagine the difficult times
they had both been going through

It seemed impossible to compare
a recent hospital photo
To this beautiful, vibrant women
with her lovely smile and healthy glow

Jo radiates positivity
and things don’t seem to get her down
After all it would be such a shame
to turn that bright smile into a frown

Over the coming weeks and months
in our thoughts they both will be
As they strive towards ringing that bell
in celebration of being cancer free

Best wishes for Jo, Julie. The way you relate this episode and the friendship is just superb. No other way of putting it. I almost felt that I was there with you. Thanks..

Agree with RJ. This disease still affects far too many but the
advances in both recognition and treatment are encouraging.

Cancer is such an emotive subject and there are many poems about its darkness, but your work puts a positive lighter spin which is commendable
