Madness

We talk about war crimes,

But all war is a crime.

No one should have to take up arms

And to try to kill his brother.

Health warnings flash across our screens.

The lifeless husks of battle rage

Or those dismembered by explosions

(‘You may find some of these images upsetting’);

They were just following orders.

But no one should follow orders.

To hell with the brass hats, the bullies,

The fixers with their clammy handshakes,

Their girlie mags and pop-gun fantasies.

We all live in the same world.

We should be better than this.

Stop this madness now. Please.

Thanks to MC, Greg, Julie and the two Johns for all the comments and Laura and Clare for the likes.

We talk about a 'just war' and sometimes there is no alternative to resistance but the spectacle of violent conflict and its aftermath is always disgusting.

Super poem, Stephen. I naively thought we were beyond all this! Sadly it seems we are not!

Bang on the money. All aggressive warfare should be considered
a crime and held to account. This invasion is intended to obtain
expansion of this Russian government's influence and control.
It has nothing to do with any "threat" from NATO or "The West".
Indeed, the brazen manner in which it has proceeded indicates that no such threat is considered likely, not least the bumptious
boast of putting nuclear arms on "high alert" as an added
bully-boy tactic, clearly mocking in its "do you dare respond in
kind?" challenge..

Some Russian soldiers agree with you, Steve. Or at least, that is what we are told. Hope it is true.

I was with you all the way until the “girlie mags”, Stephen.
