Motion Doesn't Matter!

In Barcelona we have sayings

often muttered beneath our breath:

Do not waste your time in praying

until the very point of death.

Do not leap into the ocean

before the iceberg has been hit.

Do not mention Andrew Motion!

The lickspittle hypocrite!!

I sip my beloved Sangria

and the clouds begin to scatter.

My thoughts are less angrier;

I know that Motion doesn't matter!

I toast his royal toadiness

and drink until I'm Motionless.

I'm horribly oblivious to many things and don't know the man in question but I love the humour and rhythm of this, the words really tumble over each other, building up right until the end. I feel that the line 'My thoughts are less angrier;' is missing a syllable or two.

Thanks all for your comments.I'm anti-monarchy and anti-Motion.Although, I posted this on another site last year and amongst the responses he was described as both ginger and balding.A double blow. So now I feel a little pity for him.

Kinda funny to slap this together as a 'formal' sonnet against a 'formal' royal appointment. Ah, the rigours of fame. It's hard not to see Aesop on his rock though.

Unlike Greg,I am not anti monarchy and read this as a piece of fun (or a kind of piss take) I adore the Lickspittle line. Great stuff.

Yep - the guy has the perfect surname for a bullshit-peddler - and a mediocre one at that

Don't mince your words, Ray! For a start, if you're approaching this from an anti-monarchy standpoint, I'm your man! I also got hold of a copy of his latest "collection" (didn't pay for it, I hasten to add) and was shocked at its mediocrity. Just fragments, or things he'd found on Google. I thought, I could do that!
