Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team

entry picture

On 6 February, during a rescue, a member of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was very seriously injured following a 150 metre fall. His injuries are life-changing and this fund is to provide the support he will need for the rest of his life. https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/Chris-Lewis-Sup

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team
on standby every night and day
Answering calls from those in distress
from those injured or lost their way

A group of volunteers
carry out rescues and searches together
Prepared to put their own lives at risk
in every kind of weather

I was sad to hear the news
of a brave man lucky to be alive
His life will never be the same
due to the accident he survived

On a call out to save some campers
who chose to break the lockdown rules
They drove to visit the Lake District
I consider them selfish fools

An experienced team member
slipped, fell five hundred feet to the ground
Airlifted to hospital
where his life changing injuries were found

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team
are there to help, not to judge they say
There to help those in difficulty
On standby every night and day

Totally agree with JC. Proper outdoor folk would never countenance
that sort of selfish illegal behaviour. Anyone who has been on the
tops of places like CairnGorm and Ben MacDui (let alone lesser
places) will know of the hazards and risks to life and limb - never
to be treated lightly. Those who put themselves in need of rescue
in any place which has a rescue team operating are at the bottom
end of human intelligence at such a time as this.

My reaction to this story was pure anger at the thoughtless and selfish individuals who he tried to rescue, Who flouted Covid rules and have seriously endangered a volunteer by doing so. A fine on them is scarcely justice.

Thank you D Joshi. I got so angry when I heard this on the news, those two people received a £200 fine for breaching lockdown rules! This brave volunteer will now spend the rest of his life in wheelchair. Up to now nearly £700,000 has been raised.

This was a sad story to read in the news,
love the way you've depicted this in a poem.
