Things We don't write about

Things we don't write about.

We won’t write poems about wanting to Kill David Cameron

(although Gordon Brown did bore me senseless)

Nor do we write poems about the recent cuts to benefits

And the whole way the country is still mismanaged.

We won’t write poems about rising crime

And why unemployment is really rising again

Without looking at ourselves and realising

We are in part to blame for this.

We won’t write poems about Global Warming

Instead closing our eyes and think I’m alright Jack

When in reality if we don’t change our out-looks

Our children and children’s are really going to cop for it.

We won’t write poems about who

Really is in control of our country

Who really pushes that final button

And separates from the rich and the weak.

We won’t write poems about how sick we feel

Where another brave young soldier loses his life

And we still can’t sort out our messes at home

Without wanting to ride out somewhere like a cowboy.

We won’t write poems about the terrible things

In history which we brush under the carpet

Like the way life really was in Angel Meadows

in Manchester at the turn of the 20th Century.

We won’t write poems about the Miners strike

The Hungerford Massacre, Hillsborough

Or the demolition of the old Fort Ardwick estate

Without missing the full point of you ain’t careful.

We won’t write poems about Jack the fucking Ripper

Or what is the truth and what is a barefaced lie

Without looking at ourselves and realising

We are in part to blame for this.

We won’t write poems about the rising deaths

In alcoholism and drink drinking

without thinking bout those who ain’t there

but should still be here stood next to you.

We won’t write about drug related crime

And the ones who get left behind

Everytime somebody overdoes

Or does something stupid.

I’ve being there,

suffered the bloody book on that last bit.

(NB. This is only a 1st draft but after reading the conversation in the forum 'Things we don't write about' http://www.writeoutloud.net/public/newsgroupview.php?NewsThreadsID=1039&NewsGroupsID=33' - this sparked me off to write this. This poem is for Dave Bradley who started the conversation off)

Yes, I've written poems about the recession and the election too, and appreciated the poems that Larisa mentions, of her own and of David Dunn's. Nevertheless, I like this, and think it would indeed make an excellent rant.

Genital herpes - why don't you have a go at that...

Hi Andy, i think you could produce a decent rant style poem from this first draft, taking the other comments on board. ;-)

Very interesting poem, Andy. Beautiful poem. But... there are a lot of poets who write about the rising crime, about drugs, about global warming, about brave soldiers, war and peace. I write about all those things, sometimes even about political events, certainly from my point of view. Here on this site you could read the poems of my friend Dave Dunn. He also writes about all those problems.
With warmest wishes,
Larisa

Thanks Andy - don't think I've ever had a poem dedicated to me before and a passionate one it is. There are a few typos/ grammar glitches but as you say it is a first draft. It could work well as a performance piece. Not everyone would agree with everything (Christine's comment is understandable for instance) but performance is partly about provocation isn't it. Thanks again.

An interesting poem Andy. There are very occasionaly poems about drugs and the devastation they cause but they are few and far between. By and large you are right to say that people steer clear of subjects that are depressing and unchangeable - except war - you do get the odd pacifist poem...
Someone should definitely write a poem about 20% vat - what a way to kick start an ecomomy. It gives a whole new meaning to the concept... I'm just smarting cos it will put back the new kitchen I am saving up for. Perhaps by the time I've got the money, they'll have put it back down - or there'll be a new government in.... LOL . I enjoyed your poem! xx

I find it alarming that you want to kill anyone, Andy, and why? -presumably for holding a different point-of-view to your own? Cx
