GENDER NEUTRALITY

I once had a wife

and a mother

and a grandmother

I once had an Aunt

and a sister

a niece

and a female cousin

but now I have no wife

no mother

no sister

no aunt

In their place I have

a thing called

gender neutrality

my relationships changed

without me realizing it

or having a say in it

overnight I lost my entire family

you cannot hug

a gender neutral pronoun

or squeeze an ounce of love

out of something so bland

as a gender neutral word

give us back

our terminology

our specific pronouns

we once had science

we had biology

we had common sense.

The manipulation of language is a tool intended to achieve an object.
But it becomes risible and self-defeating when the absurdity of the
exercise appeals to the latent sense of the ridiculous in all of us.

Why is your poem only bemoaning the 'loss' of the female relationships? Surely by this reasoning you'd have lost your father, your grandfathers, your brothers, your uncles, your nephews, your male cousins and your sons too?
