scary night sounds

scary night sounds

he hears the night woods

soft sounds as well as scary

different from day woods

he lies in his cold bed

in cold room

hears frozen trees

grinding against each other

in the cold night wind

a hard unpleasant sound

hears distant sounds

far away in the hills

is it the sound of a wolf

or a coyote seeking a mate

owl screeches in an old tree

is it wise

why are they known as wise

when they just sit and turn

their heads almost totally around

wonders if he could twist

his head almost 360 degrees

would he be wise

what if he could fly

what if he ate mice

neighbors dogs start to bark

howling into the darkness

do they know something he does not

finally there is only a whimper

he drifts off to the sounds of the wild

wondering what morning will bring

Thank you Keith for your words of encouragement. I am new to poetry, having always been a visual artist and professor of visual art in the university from which I retired when I was in my early 60s. I am now going to be eighty in March.

The first poem I ever wrote was about 6 months ago, so I am looking for critiques and help. I am enjoying the creative juices which it stirs in my soul, as it did in painting and photography.

I hope you have the chance to read some of my other endeavors.

Cheers,
Clyde
PS I live in Portland, Maine

This poem has the ability to take the reader straight into that forest. The hallmark of a true poet.

Thank you for this

Keith
