Castlerigg Stone Circle

A circle made of thirty-eight volcanic stones

Like monumental cards that have been thrown

By some giant dealing out his giant deck

The Cumbrian landscape to bedeck

To sit within the circle, reaching to the past

Those Neolithic builders, a legacy to last

Castlerigg as the sun rises in the sky

The reason it was built, still to wonder why?

Warm sun drying the stones and the wet ground

Why they built the place I think we’ve finally found

Was it for sacred burials, mystic rituals, defences from attack?

No, it’s because the circle around it makes a great running track!

The circles have witnessed so many changes. They will still be there when the current madness is over. Waiting for us...

Your recent writes are inspiring me to visit these stone circles, can't believe I haven't been to see them. I don't suppose it would be classed as essential travel at the moment.
