Penny For The Guy

entry picture

Bonfire night in lockdown
just a bit different this year
No gathering around the fire
or stray bangers sparking fear

No spinning Catherine wheels
or rockets aiming for the sky
No fountain shower of sparks
or Roman candles shooting high

No potato pie and pea supper
no parkin cake or treacle sweets
No black peas in a plastic cup
no neighbours to meet and greet

Some of us may still celebrate
and make it a night to remember
Salute the failings of Guy Fawkes
as usual on the fifth of November

Lockdown may spoil our fun
but we can all still remember
The Bonfire nights of the past
on every fifth of November

Remember the cold night air
wrapped up warm and cosy
Excited, bright eyed children
smiling faces and cheeks rosy

Names written in loopy glows
quick, before the sparkler dies
The magical firework display
exploding across moonlit skies

A flashing frenzy of colour
lighting up the blackest sky
A shower of shooting stars
trailing rockets soaring high

Bonfire Night in lockdown
will be a let down for many
Always try to find a positive...
at least we all saved a penny

Lovely poem.
We did sparklers
Had toffee apples
And treacle toffee.
And watched all the fireworks going off in the sky.
. We couldn't go to the organised display like we normally do and all the fairground rides but we made the most of it

Find a positive.
In every darkness
Reach for the light
And pray that tomorrow brings
A brighter day

Xx blessings Julie

We can always think of this "suspended" Guy Fawkes night as an
allegory of the man himself being caught in the act and suspended
from carrying out his planned attack. We are merely on the rack of disappointment, unlike the man himself. ?

Aww, I know Hugh, we used to make our black lab a den under the stairs. I personally think fireworks should be banned apart from professional displays. Let’s hope there’s no more for a while. Lots of fireworks here too. Hope your dog is a lot happier today. Thanks for the like.

Lots of bangs and flashes round here,
My dog was curled up at my feet in fear.
