NON ESSENTIAL

My work is non essential

i'm rather sad to say

of very little value

in the thinking of today.

I've always felt myself to be

a handy sort of chap

but now i'm non essential

shrinking on the map.

The road map is a working plan

that only works for some

while others work their balls off

i'm sitting on my bum.

The black dog is a - waiting

for me to let him in -

his presence is essential

my faith is wearing thin.

Green shoots are not appearing

to pave the way ahead

there's something in the air tonight

that fills me full of dread.

With NHS and others

essential in their way

i'll take what's now on offer

a carpet I shall lay

for non essential workers

and we will walk together

cap in hand a jaunty air

and wait for heavy weather.

First off, thanks for reading and liking John, Tony, Brian, Paul , Shifa, Stephen G, Julie, and Stephen A.

Thanks Keith for your personal take, involving a central element of the poem and expressing that in your own way.

A poetic take as a comment, always bringing fresh views Mark, thanks.

Ah Paul ! Yes, the joy of speed and rhyme , wind it up and watch it go.

There's at least another poem in your mind with that comment, I reckon. When trying to be a little political I usually dowse it with philosophy, so well spotted.

Ray . (Thrilled with the responses).

Nice irony, Ray as always. Think we have a right ot 'sit on our bums' now, as we have'worked our balls off', metaphorically for me, in the past. Don't know why we should feel depressed at being 'non-essential 'according to some. In some ways I can't wait to die, as my family would then realise how essential for their general and financial wellbeing I was!!!!! Not really worth it though!

Never mind Ray - keeping active is the secret and carpet laying is
certainly that ! As for being of use today...we need merely recall -
There were those around in another day
Whose sacrifice let others find their way
Via the price they were prepared to pay
So the future would be here to stay ! ?

Ray,

The opening stanzas could sound a cord of despair as we grow older and begin to feel valueless. However, we form a resource of experience and knowledge, a source of wisdom which younger generations have yet to acquire. When younger we too saw those on their bums and passed them by not knowing what a treasure house they stored.

Thank you for this
Keith
