Only The Shadow Of Her Face

Oh, then we were inseparable

Nothing could keep us apart

Nights and days we revelled

We shared one loving heart

She's gone now, taken so quick

I watch in vain for some trace

But her spirit refuses to emerge

Only the shadow of her face

Its like her soul never existed

A mirage from the day we met

Did I dream the words of love

That entrapped me in her net?

She was not one for possessions

I walk around touching her stuff

It leaves me  feeling cheated

She did not leave me enough

Last night I awoke to her voice

So close, knelt still by my side

Whispering of a past new to me

Before disappearing, she cried

I realise now it was all an act

Her defences were too strong

She'd been hurt when a child

Trust to her was always wrong

She stole my life with her own

I saw myself ringing up the police

She dangled there till they came

Pretending she'd found release

She's gone now, taken so quick

I watch in vain for some trace

But her spirit refuses to emerge

Only the shadow of her face
