Loved to Death

entry picture

Paving stones a crazy brilliant red

redder than the roses growing there

but she loved him so, they all said.

Picked up a smiling child from school

just as usual,the teacher said.

Left the supermarket with bulging bags.

Why bother? the police said.

Walked serenely up the pretty path

unlocked the heavy front door

soared up to the top floor

With what in mind? they said.

Hung up their coats on hangers

put the groceries on their shelves

just like her normal day.

Ever so tidy, the husband said.

Took him gently by a small hand

defenceless against such love

stroked his hair, a hug, a kiss.

So loving, her family said.

Both down over the black iron rail

in a last deadly parody of love.

The postman passed out,

so all the papers said.

Paving stones a crazy brilliant red

redder than the roses growing there

such an affectionate Mum,they all said

Thanks Ray Abdul and Poem for the comments! When a couple don't get on, people usually seem to have an idea of what might happen, but when it just involves one parent with a child, everyone seems to be so surprised. Small children are so vulnerable

Thanks again for the encouragement. Jennifer

Jennifer

You describe a tregedy of Greek proportions in this sad poem. Well constructed.

This act happens the world over.

Why?

One shouldn't presume to know the reasons.

Such a powerful account and really cleverly told as it is focusses on what people said about it the act, completely at sea which is the shocking thing . It begs the question how did things get this far? We don't always see into hearts and minds. The repeated first and last verses so effective.

Thanks Don, Michael, Philipos and Hannah for the comments, and Hannah, Brian and It's just me for the likes. Glad you found something in it. Parents killing their children is just something I will never understand, and I suppose they must be so distraught at the time that they don't either. This kind of tragedy happens every year, and each time no-one seems to have had any idea that the child or chldren were in any way at risk.

Thanks again, jennifer

How tragic Jennifer - some situations are inexplicably difficult to handle. Blessings to the responders having to deal with it - some memories never go away. Blessings. P

The tension builds in this poem in such a way that you know something is going to happen. Something, unexpected, yet suspected.
Tragic, sadly these things do happen.
A memorable one.
