How to approach a new year
the same as I did last year
scaring myself
surprising myself
reminding myself
salford girls can soar
showing that this woman
has more than she ever imagined
or bargained for
don’t expect me to turn over a new leaf
cos I’ll be springing into summer’s warmth
whooping through autumnal days
there’ll be no kicking of heels
when I’m kicking up a snow storm

Beyond the beige
And everyday tasks,
And the re-emergence
Of discarded new ideas,
Lies a truth.
Look under the layers
Of used tissues
To the heart of things.
The matter’s root.
Listen to the sounds between the clock ticks
for the meaning of time passing.
Then dig through the pie crust.
Devour what lies beneath.
