Hi Ann. Yes, I went on an Arvon course in 2004, for prose not poetry. I hadn't really looked at the small print, but when I got there discovered the course was primarily designed to root out bad habits. It was tough. I think I wrote my best piece at the beginning of the week, and my worst at the end. Two people left the course in midweek. We were given a template to construct fiction, and I could see the sense in it, but I don't think I've ever used it. Write the kind of poetry you enjoy writing - I guess that's obvious - it shouldn't be like a grinding school exercise. But sometimes it's enjoyable to try something new. And read as much as you can. And don't beat yourself up about not getting published. Blimey, that's good advice. It's about time I started following it!

Hallo Ann. Well done for plucking up the courage to talk to Helen Dunmore; does she live in St Ives? I tend to profess an anti-celebrity scorn which probably just masks shyness. I didn't talk to Carol Ann Duffy about poetry at all, just football, a bit. After the reading in the evening my walking compadres queued up to have their books signed, and mentioned that we had been in the pub that afternoon. I just took their pictures to put on my Facebook page - but at the same time talked to a very nice lady who runs the Much Wenlock poetry festival which had taken place just up the road a few weeks before.

Thanks for your comment on "Untitled - you bastard". I should have said that this poem is a homage to, and a pastiche of, one by Dermot Glennon called "Untitled" which is far more disturbing than my poor effort and could be regarded as his 'signature poem'. So it's just a bit of fun that anyone who has seen Dermot perform will understand and hopefully have a laugh. I performed it last night and Dermot got it right away but it took the rest of the group about a third of the poem before it dawned on them what it was about and it did cause some merriment.

Hi Ann..NO MORE DECORATING LOL...it would be nice to read some published poetry but i wouldnt know where to start and wouldnt want to feel different about my own as i suppose it feels safe in my own comfort zone,but i guess i should read and learn. i have bought a childrens poetry book for my grandson ben,s birthday . he will be 7 in a couple of weeks and he has just read a roald dhall book from start to finish.his reading has become so good over the last few months and he likes poetry and how it rhymes so cant wait to give him his book ! i will enjoy reading it myself .. well ive got to start somewhere i guess lol. i still think that your work is brill! so be confident !! lv bernie xx ps. like your new profile pic x

Hi Ann - I was into digital photo editing to a small extent 25 years ago - but it was getting my hands on the RISC OS system that radically improved things for me - Photodesk was incredibly powerful even 15 years ago - much easier than Photoshop on the PC. You can of course buy photo clip art discs with 'royalty free' images on them - a safe way to find a suitable image. My own interest was born out of the need to provide large images for exhibition panels - most enlargements looked 'blocky' or pixelated when we used the zoom functions on our big colour copier, so I would scan the images into the computer and do what I could to soften the ragged edges, hehe. It can be fun playing with photo editors, but I've yet to find a windows program I like to use for that purpose. best wishes, Dave

Hehe - and who am I to deny it Ann? ;) The picture is a composite I made from some of my digital photos - the sky from the fens, the wildfowl from Peakirk bird park, the 'house' derived from the village school house - all heavily edited in Photodesk about 12 years ago on my trusty RISC-OS computer...
