Thanks all.
Yes, Philipos, although IMHO the caffs these days are not what they were.
And yes Brian, it was intended to about a woman whose partner had died.

Like Philipos my first thought centred on the use of words 'stillborn' and 'midwife', but I believe these are used as metaphors and the poem is not about childbirth at all. My feeling is that this is to do with being left by the man she had planned her future with. Only Trevor knows...
Great poem Trev!

Quite a write Trevor - I was humbled reading this - I especially like the ordered way you set out your work, it's what is merely hinted at that gives it the power.
It is very often these subtleties, which drive the momentum.
Thumbs up on this, big time.
Who hasn't sat in a caff on the corner and watched the momentum of an ever changing world.
I'm guessing it is a lady who didn't go full term with a pregnancy - and i know from a family member how devastating that can be.
Great compassionate piece.

Wonderful, Trevor. Anguish and hurt in spades. Brilliantly understated story-telling. It reminded me of Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson and of Betjeman's Pershore Station.
I suppose we all had a different interpretation of what the backstory was, which is a quality in itself, being able to offer different pictures to us all. My own take was a girl thinking of her WW1 soldier who didn't come home.
One of the best things I've ever read on this site.
