EVIL
What lies beneath or in between
sees little light until it seems
the black of night brings out its teeth
then evil comes from underneath
What is it in the minds of men
that brings out evil, mean and grim
is it in man's nature, hidden deep
that cruelty so often repeats
Where in the heart does evil lie
its commonness can't be denied
in darkest moods it is applied
to lesser souls who can't reply
Inside all men, virtue competes
with evil trends and cruel conceit
the fight repeats, again and again
let good men resist, lest evil win.

Great writing! Evil does seem to be so present now, or perhaps we get to know what is happening more as the media delight in telling us about ever more gory crimes. Why do they have to tell us 'he was
burnt alive after the accident', or the number of stab wounds some poor soul received? 'Virtue competes with evil trends and cruel conceit' - memorable.
