I used to cringe at the, "Politically correct," label,

Referring to me and my kind as, "Differently able,"

I used to think, "For fucks sake, just say disabled, it's fine,"

Although in my case, not so obvious, as the issue is my mind,

And then I heard a young man explain his autism,

How he thanked God for it, I loved his optimism,

But it was true that the focus of his unique mind,

Meant that in his field, he left everyone else behind,

And that's when it struck me, what we bring to the table,

And why we should embrace that label of, "Differently able,"

'Cos when faced with the trials of life, we should be truly thankful,

That we all seek solutions from a different angle.

I think different is fine, more than fine actually, to my mind in this context, it just means unique. Maybe somewhere out there, there's a tiny little unique problem that only I could solve and make someone or something's life a little bit better, or maybe I already have and just don't know it.
Or maybe it's none of the above, whatever, we're all still unique.?

I like he term 'differently able'. I was born with a 'differently able' condition and thank God for it. Without it I could not write what I do.

Well put and thought provoking. I do struggle with 'differently able.' But mostly with the concept/label of 'different' which is just an opinion based on someone else's idea of 'normal' which most often is simply 'common'. And that is a bucket of worms!
