Humanity without the humane

The faint strangled cry

of a separated child,

parents detached

when the need is most.

An emotional bond

smashed to smithereens,

lack of food, lack of space

lack of sleep, lack of love.

We are bringing up

traumatised infants.

What example are

we setting for our future?

Does the human

no longer exist in humanity?

Have we become our

own worst nightmare?

Thank you, Jennifer. I wrote this with the US/Mexican border camps in mind, but your interpretation is true, also.

Obviously heartfelt, and unfortunately nowadays children are sofrequently traumatised when the parents split up. The older ones perhaps may understand better, but for the young ones their world just falls apart. Then sometimes there is also parental alienation. On the other hand one could say that a divorce is better than fighting the whole time. Either way the kids lose out.

Looking through history, John, I think we always have been.
