Independent presses and publishers from across the East Midlands, together with many writers from the region, will be at the Clephan Building at De Montfort University, Leicester, on Saturday, 20th March, for an independent press day.

‘States of Independence’ will be a full day – 10.30 am to 4.30 pm - of workshops, readings and book launches, as well as stalls from dozens of independent publishers, that is open to all and free of charge.

Forty writers, mostly from the East Midlands region, will be reading from their work during the day; including such well-known literary figures as children’s writers Berlie Doherty (two times winner of the Carnegie Award) and Chris D’Lacey, novelists Anthony Cartwright (whose novel Heartland was recently read on R4’s Book at Bedtime) and Rod Madocks, and poets Gregory Woods and Deborah Tyler-Bennett. There will also be the launch of the new international poetry magazine – Cleave.
