Fairytales

Life owes you precisely nothing,

The exact amount it intends to pay out,

So don't set your heart on the, "Fairytale,"

You're most likely not in with a shout.

Don't torture yourself every day,

With how "better" your life could be,

Just praise all your blessings 'cos it's quite depressing,

When you want more and more endlessly.

Give thanks for your home and your hearth,

However humble it be,

For three square meals, the sunshine, the fields,

And the love of your family.

Life promised you none of these things,

They are not laid down as your right,

Your friendships and kin are something you win,

By enduring this challenging fight.

So don't set your sights on the, "Fairytale,"

Give thanks for the gifts you've compiled,

As an adult, treasure the things you've achieved,

Don't wish for the, "Dreams of a child."

Thanks Martin, we all have the dreams of a child when we're children but as an adult have to put away childish things, quite sad really, it would probably be a better world if we didn't, but it's a harsh world for the childish.

Thanks Ruth for liking.

Jason that final stanza sums it all up for me. We can spend so much time chasing childhood fantasy and missing the point. Yet I do find that some of those fantasies that I have experienced in my life have helped me to write. Or maybe its just a sense of imagination. At any rate a great poem.

Jason I do enjoy your phrases.

The ones I identify with most are

"three square meals, the sunshine and fields,
and the love of you family"

and

"You friendships and kin are something you win
by enduring this challenging fight"

What more could any one want? for me, you have said it all.

Beautiful and wise and original ?Quite the voice you have Jason? The dreams of children are quite painful and sometimes superficial. At the end of the day we all search for that wisdom.
Thank you
Mae
