The Smug Bastard

The Smug Bastard

He marched in triumph

at the head of his men

basking unjustly in adulation

aimed at the deeds performed

by his troops,

the smug bastard

His chest puffed out

like a carrier pigeon

selfish eyes seeking

to be sanctioned

by female admirers,

the smug bastard

Cruel, ambitious, self-centered

the lives of his men were only

a means of furthering his career

at the expense of theirs,

the smug bastard

Retribution often comes

from behind

as it surely did

to our 'Gallant' Colonel.

The Smug Bastard.

Thank you for your valued comments Po...

Doesn't it always seem to be the 'shit-kickers' at the bottom of the pile who hold things together !

Yeah Big Sal, I guess it was more prevalent than the army would ever admit.

This poem is based on conversation I had with a fellow traveller on an overnight coach between London & Glasgow.
My companion had been a squaddy during the Falkllands conflict.

This is exactly one of the reasons why American soldiers in Iraq started to frag their superiors.
