DEATH OF A BAR

DEATH OF A BAR

Barcelona 2012

The warmth has gone,

the boar's head taken down

all fireplace brick surrendered

to the sledgehammer,

that old woman who

punished fruit machines

denied her homebound pleasure,

the jaunty evening crowd

now scattered like funeral ash.

The barmaid with her optimistic hair

left stranded, the perrenial

inviting smile subdued by silence.

I'd like to ask what you make

of all this murder -

what led them to decide

that these cold grey walls were

somehow more appropriate

than the pulse of life.

Thanks for your comments guys. Fortunately the owners did see the error of their ways and later abandoned the restaurant concept and restored it to something resembling its former self. When I asked what happened to the boar's head the barmaid replied "tu tienes buena memoria!" But the last time I passed, the place had closed down completely and available to rent. I'm waiting to see what the next manifestation will be.

There’s definitely a sense of mourning when a beloved restaurant or bar closes down. You have captured that feeling very well.

Compelling writing John. To the point but with compassion and depth. The phrase optimistic hair wins it for me, just a detail but important in the scene. I can't comment on the background of it but I admire the whole piece.
