THE HOLY GHOST

Amongst those I admire most

must surely be the Holy Ghost.

Indefinable, unfathomable,

a lesson to us all

in how to remain invisible

yet unfailingly enthrall.

With a presence compulsory

though indescribable to most.

Yes, amongst the Ones I much admire

must be the holy Ghost.

Something you will never meet

except on a lost horizon;

nevertheless its place is assured

being universally adored

from simple shack to spired edifice

always at his post (her post)

is the much admired

never expired

ineffable Holy Ghost.

I love - and always laugh at - that tale from the late lamented comedian/story-teller Dave Allen - about his
childhood graveside memory of hearing "into the hole he goes" for the words "and the Holy Ghost". Magic stuff!

Thank you for the comment John. That's a very salient point you make. Fear has its part to play sadly. It seems so unfair being expected to adopt the full blown trappings of belief at that age. Good that you have emerged still with your own intact! A friend of mine endured torment from being gay with the same expectations of him to conform.

All the best, Ray

Hi Ray,

As a small child I was taught to say bedtime prayers but couldn't bring myself to say "Holy Ghost" as it was too scary. Now as a lapsed Catholic since age 14 I prefer to just meditate on the great spirit - the life force that moves us all. I reckon I'm a Taoist these days.

I liked the line: From simple shack to spired edifice.

Hi Mark, I doth tremble at the prospect! Thanks for reading.

Glad it worked for you Taylor , thanks!

Thanks Hannah, appreciate your comment.

Brian, you have the answer there, unless of course God is invisible as claimed. Of course invisible doesn't necessarily mean non - existent, except in an existentialist sense. Know wha' I mean?

Cheers David. Glad you enjoyed this. The word ineffable just seemed to fit the essence, and now I have looked it up I see what you mean. There are many grandiloquent words attached to the mysteries, how would it be otherwise. I loved the clip - so right. Barbed and brimming with truth.

Tom, Big Sal, Jon and Anya, I'm grateful as always for your interest.
Thanks folks all. Ray

I'm not a believer myself, but if I were I would have to have great faith in a holy ghost, holy spirit...call it what you will. How else could God be on every believer's shoulder whenever needed? It must be comforting.

Neatly constructed with a nod to our human fallibility -
Followed with a blind devotion
That surrenders logic to emotion.
But it seems that (near or far) fate
Will see us meet the devil incarnate!
