THE MARCH OF THE MISGUIDED

The following is a response to the People's Vote 2 march in my own backyard here in London.

It's the March of the Misguided,

An insistent voice confided.

What sees them want a servile role

To foreign rule beyond control?

What sees them play perfidy's part

Far removed from Freedom's heart

And the history of this ancient nation

That always fought tyranny's oration?

What persuades them to obey the orders

Of those who would control our borders

And make decisions above our own?

What dangerous seeds they would see sown.

It's the March of the Misguided,

The same insistent voice confided.

Hi Brian! Always happy to hear from you - and hope all is
well with you in the land of the long-suffering and put-upon! Funny, isn't it, how lands that have put themselves
out - working to achieve great things, now act as a magnet
to those whose own motivation and pride in country seem
so lacking. It conjures up the worker whose idle neighbour seeks to benefit from his industry and sacrifice by moving in! ?

Mark and Brian, I concur completely with your comments and the message in your poem. The re-interpretation of national history seems rampant here as well, and the popular political and social 'movements' lead and supported mostly by younger folk (although probably initiated and funded by others with their own motives).

Thanks Hannah. The subject is certainly worth the close
attention of - and assessment by - future historians.
Brian - it does seem true that there is a generational
schism involved. I have wondered for some time what
has been taught over a considerable number of years. History and our role seems more of a subject for guilt
and self-flagellation than anything about achievement
or example.
The contentious issue of the border between Eire and Northern Ireland as a block to a Brexit outcome is open to challenge for the reasons as to why it should be so.
For example: Switzerland has borders with a number of
EU nations yet there has been no intimation at any time
of any difficulty in the daily reality concerning the
movement between the first mentioned country and its various EU neighbours.
I've emailed my MP to seek the reasons why this happy
situation cannot be transferred to the Eire/N. Ireland
border scenario and the problem resolved as a result.
I await his answer with interest.

In the future people will look to the poetry to try to understand it.
Glad you wrote this one.

You're preaching to the converted with me Mark. To a large extent it's a generation thing...people of our generation hark back to days of independence and we simply hated it whenever made to toe the line e.g by the IMF. Younger people have never known life outside of the EEC/EU and it is perhaps understandable for them to be cautious of a step into the unknown. Though as I have said more than once on WOL, perhaps if they had been bothered to go and vote the result could have been quite different...and now in a desperate attempt to redeem themselves they want another referendum.
