One Bright Day

One bright day, oh, glory, glory, glory.

The sun, the sky, the beach, the sea

A double shot espresso, the breeze.

I saw the seal, at first a little to my right

Moments later to my left and closer in.

Black head bobbing and diving.

Unusual, I thought, in these waters.

When it beached, almost at my feet,

It was shiney, bloated, somehow darker than black.

I tried to hold on to my glory day

But something in my mind collapsed.

The lifeless hands, the strange angle of the head,

The wet suit, ripped and white belly poking through.

I tried to put it back together - my glory day

The miracle of the seal bobbing in the water.

Tried to make sense of one bright

Gory, gory, gory day.

It never ceases to amaze me what simple and wonderful experiences lead to the creation of lovely art and this is no exception

Thank you for commenting, Hannah, Big Sal and Anya. I was just sitting on the beach this morning describing what was going on, then at line 8 my imagination led me astray.

This is a powerful poem.
I read it through twice, a dream, a nightmare.
A poem to remember. Which is what poetry is all about.
