Service Has Gone Down the Gurgler

Service has gone down the gurgler

Petrol station forecourts are gone

Fill up your car by yourself chum

Watch it go in till it's done

Car registration's online now

Or queue up in person all day

They won't put more staff on to help you

They want you online, go away

The final insult comes on having

To book hospital admission online

What happened to the specialist's receptionist
Doing this in their usual time?

I'm sick and I'm so tired of doing

Other people's job (and not paid)

Service has gone down the gurgler

Disappeared, gone, I'm afraid

The only place I get good service

Is my garden centre (can we help you?)

They choose and bring plants to my car boot

And don't charge a dollar to do

I don't like the way we are going

I'm wanting to scream and shout out

But it won't make a damn bit of difference

'Cause it's greed for the dollar we're about

When we start changing direction

See people more important than cash

There might be a chance to then fix up

This wound in society – this gash

We can't change the world Don but we can light a small fire in the corner. Remember my 'bought a return ticket and didn't come back'? Futile as it turned out!

What?

You're just a lowly poet rhyming in the wilderness

Sing and shout all you like, I rule supreme now

Yes Oh King Money (sitting on your gilded throne)

You will detect this is more than just a piece of poetry but my cry of frustration at what I see happening and my utter helplessness to do anything about it ?

How true!! What about the bl...y banks? They do what they like with your cash, give you nothing for being able to use it, (when you have any!) then if you want a loan or to increase your overdraft they refuse even to talk to you face to face about it.

Great piece, Jennifer

Much to agree with here. The disappearance of the small petrol station with its attendant(s) is a more frequently met
example of the mechanisation/profit orientated changes we
meet these days. I continue to use small businesses when
I can - but somehow, all too quickly, they disappear or are
consumed by bigger concerns busy enlarging their empires.
Bah! For progress, read "regress"!

Great piece, that I can identify with, Don.

And Brian, don't get me started on airlines: "ok, you've booked your flight. Oh, you wanted a seat - that's extra..."

A great theme Don which people over a certain age will identify with. My favourite is airlines which encourage me to check in and print boarding cards 'for my convenience'.
