MARKING TIME

Marking time should be a crime,

Only Man invents the ways

To remind ourselves of how it goes -

Each ticking off the days!

But when our spirits are in the dock

Of the Court of Vanished Time

We might regret we lived by the clock

And consider our obsession a crime

Which saw us slaves to a merciless master

As remorseless as the tide

That served to see unfulfilled lives go faster

Until each fading fleshlight died.

I remember my late stepfather - a Victorian by birth and
Edwardian in his upbringing - was a martyr to the clock.
Maybe his memory played a part in this blog.
Who recalls the opening of the famous film "Gone With The
Wind"? (the "Wind" referring to Union General Sherman and
his remorseless march to the sea, devastating the land for miles either side of its progress and earning the undying
enmity of the South) - and the filmed words that preceded the story:
"Do not squander time, it is the stuff that life itself is made of".

We're all guilty of wasting time; but there should be room for rest and activity, both taking time Mark. There is always more potential in life than we can possibly accommodate, and who judges that? Whether guilt is pronounced or not depends on freedom of choice. I'm not quite sure who is the master in the poem - but he sure puts the shits up me!
