The Lone Driver

The Lone Driver

A road well worn with potholes

no pavements or lay-bys only hedges

which are unkempt and bristling with gorse

Oncoming traffic causes us to swerve and avoid

sometimes the gradient is steep

This is the road of life, a road driven alone

passengers may offer advice but the

steering wheel is not in their hands

Concentration and vision matter most

when in difficulty or an accident occurs

when the chips are down

one finds that no one is around

It isn´t easy, it is tiring and stressful

yet onward we persevere

as there is no turning back

There seems to be no obvious destination

Perhaps we should have stayed at home

and never have set off in the first place

Keith

Like Hazel I thought the analogy was clever. The last two lines were a surprise turnaround. And yes, staying at home to avoid the complexities of life out there does get more appealing as you age.

A lovely analogy Keith. I think a lot depends on the quality of your 'vehicle'. Personally, I'm getting more and more interested in 'staying home'.
