                                            original Basho Haiku no capitols.no punctuation no syllables as in english, Japanese phonemes are not syllables they are phonemes ( sounds not syllables ) 17 syllables are not the same as 17 Japanese phonemes.  even one syllable words in english may have two or three japanese phonemes.  causing 17 syllable count incorrect.  Basho created Haiku in the 16th century,the americans created their misunderstanding of Haiku less then 100 years ago.  original Haiku form in following poem.

                                                  clouds part

                                                  bird silhouette

 

Most famous Basho Haiku in all of Japan..............................old pond

                                                                                                 water sound

                                                                                only 7 english syllables,BUT perfect Japanese..
