Having a poem

entry picture

Having a poem….

The first ones just popped out

Easy as peas from a pod.

Like bonny bouncing babies they arrived -

My poems.

Full of life, shiny and new

Gurgling away or confidently screaming

“me me me”

“listen to me!”

The next litter of poems

Didn’t come so easily -

They had to be induced!

And when they had arrived

They were quite shy.

Would they be good enough?

Some of them had inferiority complexes!

Some were jealous of each other

saying “I’m better than you”

“I’m longer than you!” “I rhyme!”

I expect they’ll all grow up and leave home eventually,

Finding their own way in the world.

Most will disappear without trace, some will make friends and meet people.

One day I might see them and not recognise them.

At the moment they’re busy breeding!

I hope none of them lose the will to live………..

This is great Ann. Have just commented on Swimming Away too. Two beauts - you had twins!

I've had so many poetry miscarriages that this speaks volumes to me. I've not even managed to give birth to one FTND yet

(full term normal delivery)

ie one that is not still in the high dependency unit

thank goodness for poem mothers like Ann F to keep me trying.

I agree with Kealan, this is great.
I've only ever heard about the pain of childbirth but i do recognize the pain of trying to get a poem right. Still trying for that matter.
I've lost count of the times the little blighters have been grounded. :-)

This is a great piece, the theme is original and well thought out. We are the parents of our poems and we are responsible for their actions. At first i thought it to be a humourous piece but as i read on i realized it was much more than, there is a physical and metaphysical connection between the writer and the written, good stuff.

Funny!
What an interesting and creative analogy!

Delightful! Highly imaginative, and honest.

Keep everything, Ann. What does it take to pop a 'line' into a 'Save' somewhere, and then do a back-up? Every thought you care enough about to put into a 'scribble' has life already, or the potential of life. They become riches to plumb at the weirdest times, and they will be wonderful. Age or academic development has nothing to do with insight.

I sound like a real geek today.

What a clever concept. Its funny how some poetry seems to write itself, and some is a labour of love, and some you just have to force out with birth pangs! Not you obviously TC, that was metaphorically speaking of course!

If you leave them lying around on scraps of paper, or hidden in the depths of your memory stick long enough, you will forget you have even written them !! ha ha.... great concept for a poem and how true.... ;-)
