PARADISE LOST

IS THIS THE PARADISE WE WERE PROMISED

they shouted

like headless chickens with beards

in a slaughterhouse exposed

while demons came from every corner

with mirrors reflecting the sun

blinding them with night

and the Gods of Hate so pleased with them

for bringing the innocent

to the funeral feast

and never an end in sight.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I must have touched some nerves with those quoted lines - delving into the ridiculous I feel is a liberty that can stir the imagination. Meeting pet subjects head on I think is often not that powerful. I wanted to convey the post death confusion suffered by those at the mercy of extremists expecting something more glorious. Who knows what awaits - if anything? All you observations are appreciated. I am not on drugs by the way, but I like my ovaltine shaken not stirred.

Thank you Emer for your like on this!

Love to all . Ray

Great images! Headless chickens with beards! Sun blinding with night! Fascinating. (Who is your supplier?)

Hi Ray,

the impossibility of the scene you set is very interesting, "headless chickens with beards, the suns reflection blinding them with night" seems to speak of the misinterpretation of scripture or of its perversion, maybe I'm being over analytical, who knows.

People are prepared to believe the impossible if it promises them what they want, right up until they reach the doors of the slaughterhouse, when its too late.

Great images,

David.

Ray, this well composed poem has many interpretations. I have chosen mine. The words ´the funeral feast´are the culmination which so impact on me. Thank you for this. Well done. Keith
