Bobby Dylan

Bobby Dylan

I wrote to Bob Dylan

a little while back.

I just wanted him to know

how much his music

inspired me,

and that I’ve always kept track

of his highs and his lows,

every line, every lick.

I’ve tried to live my life,

I said,

in the spirit of his songs.

‘The Times They Are a-Changin’’

Inspirational lyrics,

buried in my head,

for so long,

constantly changing.

I thought he might want to know

I’ve completely re-written ‘Forever Young.’

It’s possible that may have upset him.

Perhaps what could make it worse,

Is that I also told him

I’ve added one more verse.

He hasn’t written back - yet.

And I’d named a child after him

(Ian Richard Dylan, not Catherine).

Too late to do any name-changin’ I suppose.

So I thought I’d drop a line

to Paul Simon,

Give him the benefit etc.

I thought he might want to know

I’ve completely re-written ‘Homeward Bound,’

and that I’ve added one more verse.

As yet there’s been no reply.

Of course Homeward Bound has a north-west connection, doesn't it? Was it Wigan or Warrington station Paul Simon was sat on? As an S&G fan and a railways buff I'd like to get it right

Hi Steve, no offence taken at all. I don't get particularly nervous (although I may seem it) I just love drinking! Bobby Dylan is a fine poem, I love the humour in it, you may have heard me guffawing a couple of times during your performance, and I was sober (ish) at the time. You delivery is so calm too. I hope you are enjoying the whole thing as I'm sure you are.

All of our names came from Jeffery Farnoll novels - a little known romance writer my dad used to love reading. As a child - I so regretted that he hadn't called me Sharon.... This is a good performance poem Steve - it was dry and amusing and well read at Hebden.

this is excellent, bob dylan is a life long idol to me theres very few days i dont listen to at least one song. i dont think he would mind you changing around his song (as you propably already know he started off his career by doing his own versions of woody guthrie and rick von schmidt songs so its all in good faith. my sisters name is acually corrina after the dylan song, but anyway great poem.
