A VISIT TO BLENHEIM (A Churchill speech)

The long shadow of Blenheim has cast

a longer shadow of victories past

of men who led against the stream

to tackle tyrants and crush their dream.

Come you to Blenheim now to see

these walls and arches of destiny

come with your denim and pocket guides

to see where fragile peace abides

and ask the ghosts how they made their play

that finds you alive in Blenheim today.

Cheers Kevin nice of you. The older I've got the easier the impression has become. Congratulations for your Marsden poem too!

HI David. Sometimes humour is a curse, as one won't be taken seriously as in acting awards; in my case the humour really comes through in the reading I guess. How could anyone today take that accent seriously? I think in retrospect many matters should be viewed with humour as it does come quite close to tragedy. Thanks I appreciate your double take of course! I did read this at the Keep and it did raise a titter. I did want to make a serious point in keeping with the spirit of the times.

Very kind Tony I am uplifted by one who knows the art of poetry and its pitfalls as well as its peaks. I felt as if the couplet was like a call from the grave.

Lovely comment Stu ! Glad you looked in really. It makes the site worth while for me.
