I Was Born With Too Many Echoes

This is a really old one.  Think I was about nineteen when I wrote it...But it's not bad.

I WAS BORN WITH TOO MANY ECHOES

I was born with too many echoes

like a cave dark and resounding

waves come through me and drench me

in their shuddering fall

and you say explain if you will

your sudden silences

your strange dreams

and the mad hot rushing tears

at the moment when my heart

is breaking with love for you

and fear

and sorrow

and pain

I borrow my words from a world unknown

to this empty space I call my home

I was born with too many echoes

like a cave dark and resounding

waves come through me

drench me

in their shuddering fall

and you say let me hold you

let me kiss you

let me hold back the devouring night

and let me love you now

in the morning it’ll be allright

at the moment when my heart

is breaking with love for you

trembling on the edge of a wave

drowning memories

let me hold you against the night

and let me lie helpless

against the bruising of the sea

I was born with too many echoes

a cave dark and resounding

waves coming through me

drench us in their shuddering

and you say explain if you will

your sudden silences and your empty stare

how you touch me without touching

and the mad hot rushing tears

at the moment when my heart

is breaking with love for you

and fear

and sorrow

and pain

echoes of an older world

rolling around our helpless flesh
