John Michael Porter

John Michael Porter, died, aged 42.

Beloved husband, and a father too.

Engraved upon a stone, obscured by weeds

That cover up a life of unknown deeds.

He lived and died not all that long ago,

His grave untended, so we’ll never know

Who lies here, in this final place of rest,

And was his unknown life then cursed or blessed.

John Michael Porter, died, aged 42.

The graveside marker only gives this clue.

And all those years are lost now in the mist

Of time, so we just know he did exist.

His children now must have some children too,

But he’s long passed from mind as well as view;

Descendants that now carry on his name,

Oblivious to his familial flame.

Then through the graveyard, as we travel on,

Among abandoned plots of all who’ve gone,

Much saddened that there’s no one now who knew

John Michael Porter, died, aged 42.

You sum up the unkown lives of nearly all the departed and in a way challenges the very idea of headstones and the like when after time there is little if any significance in an epitaph. A poem to provoke thought and well composed. Thank you. Keith
